Kenya’s President William Ruto is expected to visit his counterpart President Salva Kiir Mayardit in Juba on Wednesday, the Press secretary in the office of the president, Lily Adhieu Martin announced on Tuesday.

The one-day working visit Lily said will update president Kiir on the status of the Tumaini Initiative-the Nairobi-based peace talks spearheaded by Ruto.

According to the press secretary, the visit will clear the ongoing impression that President Kiir has abandoned the Nairobi Peace talks.

Ruto’s visit comes after the government’s high-level standing committee last week visted him at stste house Nairobi, where he pledged his government’s committment to supporting the success of Tumaini Initiative for the benefit of South Sudanese people.

“The purpose of the working visit of president Ruto is to inform, compare notes, touch base and update his excellency president Salva Kiir Maryardit on the peace talks,” Lily said. Adding, “This visit is important because it will put to rest the impressions out there that his excellency the president has aborted, abandoned and is no more interested in the Tumaini Initiative.”

The press secretary debunked reports that president Kiir is no longer interested in the Tumaini Initiative, stressing that the head of state initiated the talks for lasting peace in South Sudan

“His excellency the president has said on record that on his watch, South Sudan will not go back to war again. Against that backdrop, his excellency thought that in order to achieve lasting peace, that all Junubin [South Sudanese] should be included to have a lasting peace. So it’s ridiculous, it is preposterous and its very uncalled for when we say that his excellency is no longer interested in the Tumaini Initiative which is totally false,” asserted Lily.

Ruto is expected in Juba at 10:30 am on Wednesday.
